Bulgaria: Green cities for Sustainable Europe

On 25 October 2018, decision makers, urban planners, nursery stock producers, landscape architects and green influencers will meet in Sofia to discuss the green and sustainable future of the European cities. The international conference “Green cities for Sustainable Europe” is the first of that type event in Bulgaria within the European initiative launched earlier this year under the same slogan.

International conference in Sofia will discuss the greening of our cities

Uniting participants by the motto “The green cities are happy cities”, the Conference will provide a platform for sharing green expertise and knowledge from various countries across the world and promoting new approaches and good practices in the greening of our cities in the years come.

Today, many cities across the world are already suffering from the negative effects of climate changes, as well as are facing serious problems in the social cohesion. Around 2050, when 70% of the world's population will be living in urban areas, the negative consequences of climate change on living conditions will raise serious challenges, due to higher temperature, more frequent and excessive rainfall with consequential flooding, more widespread and excessive drought etc.  Parks with trees, shrubs, water basins and recreational areas as well as more extended forest lands in and around urban centres will mitigate the consequences of climate change in urban areas and will also affect positively social cohesion, healthier life and biodiversity protection.

At the Conference, Bulgarian and international speakers will present examples of designing new green cities, creating up-to-date city parks and the greenery as the key element of sustainable urban environment. Furthermore, they will discuss the various policies for the green infrastructure in the cities implemented both, in Bulgaria and globally. One of the highlights of the discussions will be about the standards of the ornamental plants and the decorative plants’ certificate that is expected to be soon implemented in Bulgaria.

The Conference is part of the pan-European campaign “Green cities for Sustainable Europe”. Launched earlier this year by seven organizations - from Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, France, the UK and from the Netherlands – the campaign targets professionals that play a decisive role in city planning and landscape planning.

The Conference “Green cities for Sustainable Europe” is organized by BAOPN, the Bulgarian Association of Ornamental Plants Nurseries in partnerships with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forests, Dutch Embassy in Sofia, Forestry University and the Union of Landscape Architects. It is part of the 25th edition of STROIKO, the largest Bulgaria’s fair for architecture, construction and furnishing. AGRO TV is the media partner of the conference activities.
