Agriculture sector of Uzbekistan: recent trends

Agriculture is one of the leading sectors of Uzbekistan economy. In 2018 the contribution of the agricultural sector to GDP equaled 28.8% and 27% of the economically active country population were engaged in it.

In the export structure, agricultural products account for 6.6%. The main share in the structure of crop production is occupied by vegetables (36%), cereals (25%), potatoes (10%), cotton (8%). Since 2015 in order to diversify agricultural production, the area under cotton and wheat has been reducing, and the area allocated for vegetables, potatoes, fruits and melons and gourds increasing. In the National Development Strategy for 2017-2021 priority for agricultural sector is determined by the creation of labor-intensive production and value-added processing, which will contribute to substantial growth in rural employment, food security and exports.

Dutch companies

More and more Dutch companies have been recently paying attention to Uzbekistan as a potential partner in sphere of agriculture. Last March at least 45 Dutch companies took part in the agricultural trade mission to Tashkent and Namangan. As a follow up, several mutual projects have been launched in such sectors as greenhouse technologies, cold stores for fruit and vegetables,  technological systems and equipment for processing animal waste, agricultural machinery and equipment,  animal feeds, feed processing technology, dairy, etc. In coming June 14 companies will present the Dutch Pavilion at  AgroTech Expo 2019 in Tashkent which will hopefully be the starting point for more partnerships.
