She said that a little over 60,000 hectares in Bulgaria are put under vines. In 2019, another 85 hectares were sown. Taneva said that 61 per cent of all grape crops have been entered in the European register of protected designations of origin and geographical indications.

"This is very important because it allows producers to obtain regional and quality brands and to take advantage of the new viticulture programme which was launched in 2019," said the Minister. The first call opened on February 17.

Taneva also said that wine making has also been growing in the past years. Figures show that Bulgaria has produced 64 million litres and licensed wineries total 282.

The Minister said that Bulgaria exports wine for countries in Western Europe, China and the US.
