Bulgaria grows experimentally hybrid rice, cinoa and millet for China

In 2018, experimental areas with hybrid rice, cinoa and millet will be planted in the modern demonstration agricultural park of the Agrarian University of Plovdiv. This is a project for cooperation between Bulgaria and China, says Vassil Gelev, Executive Director of the “Chinese Center for Cooperation 16 + 1” at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Another program provides for cooperation between students from both countries in the field of agrarian science. "The opportunities for cooperation between Bulgaria and China are constantly expanding with the active work of the ministry and the other ministries in both countries. We have succeeded in reaching a number of cooperation arrangements ", added Vasil Gelev.

As an area with potential for development in Bulgaria, he pointed the Contract Farming. Specific varieties of fruits and vegetables that are sought in China can be grown in our country, he said.

In recent years there has been a decline in exports of agricultural products from Bulgaria to China, but the goal of our agro-ministry is to achieve a trade balance between the two countries. The main agricultural goods that our country exports are water, natural juices, cosmetic products with essential oils, alfalfa. In 2017, the procedure for authorizing the export of compound fodder was completed and this will be one of the goods we will export to the Asian country in the future.

Potential for export to China have also wine and rose oil products, Vassil Gelev pointed out. In addition, objects of cultural value that attract Chinese tourists will be developed, such as the demonstration center for yoghurt production in the village of Momchilovtsi.

At the end of 2018, exports of EU goods through the 16 + 1 Logistics Center are expected to amount to 500 million euros.
