Poland: number of ASF outbreaks in pigs exceeds 2019 and 2017

New outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in pig herds have again been confirmed in eastern Poland, mostly in backyard farms, reaching the number of 72 outbreaks this year. It is already higher than in 2019 (48 outbreaks) and 2017 (71 outbreaks). Hopefully the number of outbreaks will not reach the record of 2018 (95 outbreaks).

The Chief Veterinary Officer informed about the designation of new outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in pigs in the territory of the Republic of Poland. The outbreaks were confirmed mostly in backyard farms in 2 provinces in the east of Poland: in Lubelskie province and in Warminsko-Mazurskie province. All outbreaks in Lubelskie province are located in a hazard area (blue zone, area defined in part III of the Annex to EC Decision 2014/709/EU), extended recently to cover the wider area of ASF infection in wild boars and in pigs. The outbreak in Warminsko-Mazurskie province is located in a restricted area (red zone, area defined in part II of the Annex to EC Decision 2014/709/EU), where ASF is noted in wild boar population.
