The Netherlands contributes to FAO event on SAVE Food in Moscow

On 29 January 2019, Mrs. Daniëlle Kretz, Team Coordinator for ‘Sustainable Food’ of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food participated via Skype in the SAVE FOOD Conference with the presentation on the Dutch strategy on Food Waste. The Conference on combatting food loss and waste was organized by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in cooperation with OOO Messe Düsseldorf Moscow as a part of Upakovka packaging industry fair.

The event brought together Russian policymakers, private as well as not-for-profit sector representatives and international experts to discuss the policy and legal tools and solutions, available to Russia to help resolve the food loss and waste issue.

In her presentation, Mrs. Daniёlle Kretz referred to an analysis of 1,200 sites across 700 companies in 17 countries which found that 99 percent of sites had a positive return on their investment in food loss and waste reduction, and half of the sites had a return greater than 14-fold. So as a result of investments in measuring waste, training staff, improving inventory management and changing packaging, the companies got a 14-fold return with selling imperfect produce, creating new products, reducing management costs and avoiding cost of food not sold.

United against food waste

Mrs. Daniёlle Kretz also presented ‘United against food waste’ -- a Dutch initiative of the Task Force Circular Economy in Food, which consists of a large number of companies, research institutes, civil society organizations and government bodies. The task force aims to reduce food waste in the Netherlands by half in 2030 compared to the 2015 figure.
