Romania Becomes Kaufland’s Second Biggest Market

German-held retailer Kaufland, which has 119 hypermarkets in Romania, posted 10.1 billion lei (EUR2.2 billion) revenue in the country in 2017, which makes this market its second biggest after Germany.

German-held retailer Kaufland, which has 119 hypermarkets in Romania, posted 10.1 billion lei (EUR2.2 billion) revenue in the country in 2017, which makes this market its second biggest after Germany.

Romania surpassed the Czech Republic and Poland, where the retailer has more stores and also more competition, so sales per store are lower.

The retailer’s biggest markets are Germany, Romania, Poland and Czech Republic, in that order. It also has a footprint in Central and Eastern Europe and will be expanding to Australia in 2018, marking its first move into an English-speaking country, says CEO Magazine, which did an interview with Marco Hoessl, the executive who runs Kaufland Romania’s operations.

Headquartered in Neckarsulm, Germany, the group has more than 1,200 stores on nine markets, two of which new, with hypermarkets still under construction. International sales stood at more than EUR22 billion in 2017.
