Colombia’s agriculture posts second highest growth in 15 years
The National Administrative Department of Statistics, DANE published a report on Colombia’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2017. According to this report, this country’s economy grew by 1,1 per cent. Remarkably, agriculture was the sector that grew the most in this period. The growth of this sector went up by 7,7 per cent. This is the second highest growth rate in agriculture in the last 15 years. Within this sector, the cultivation of non-traditional crops and coffee contributed the most to this growth.
Recovery of the agricultural sector
According to Colombia’s Minister of Agriculture, Aurelio Iragorri Valencia, the recovery of the agricultural sector can also be attributed to the improvement of climate conditions. Also, Iragorri highlighted the positive influence of the programme “Colombia Siembra” on this sector. This initiative aims to sow one million additional hectares in Colombia for 2018. ‘Due to Colombia Siembra, we have started to see the recovery of the agricultural sector, which is reflected in the greater demand of food and the falling inflation rates’, Iragorri stated.
Agriculture has historically been one of Colombia’s most important sectors. Every year, Colombia organizes Expo Agrofuturo, a business fair aimed at promoting agricultural industry in this country with 20`000 professional visitors in 3 days and more than 40 participating countries. Colombia is currently looking for foreign assistance to help modernize this sector. Therefore, Expo Agrofuturo forms a great opportunity for enterprises interest in Colombia’s agricultural sector.
Dutch participation at Expo Agrofuturo
From 12 September to 16 September 2017, Expo Agrofuturo will be held in Medellin. The Netherlands-Colombian Business Council and the Holland House Colombia are organizing the participation of Dutch enterprises in this fair.
